Building an n8n Dead-Letter Retry Queue for Law Firm Leads
Every dropped webhook in a law firm can represent a $10,000+ lost case. Here is how we engineer dead-letter queues (DLQs) in self-hosted n8n to capture and replay failed events.
What is a Dead-Letter Queue (DLQ)?
In software architecture, a dead-letter queue is a service implementation used to store messages that could not be processed successfully by the primary consumer. When GoHighLevel or an ad platform sends a lead payload, and the downstream CRM (Clio, Lawmatics, Filevine) throws an error, the message is routed to the DLQ rather than being dropped.
The 4-Step n8n DLQ Pattern
Intercepts any 4xx or 5xx HTTP response from the Clio REST API and captures execution context.
Retries the call at intervals: 30s, 2m, 10m, and 30m to account for temporary server blips or maintenance windows.
Persists raw unhandled payloads to a persistent database with a unique event ID for manual replay.
Sends an alert to your internal tech channel with a 1-click “Re-run Payload” button.
Zero Lost Leads Guarantee
By deploying this architecture inside our custom n8n webhook middleware, law firms eliminate the fear of lost claimants during high-traffic marketing campaigns.
